The Best Way to Stay Hydrated- Eat Your Fruit
We all know that drinking water and staying hydrated is essential to staying healthy. But how many of us can actually say that we drink the proper amount of water daily? We are so used to hearing that we all need eight 8 ounce glasses of water daily, but did you know that number is actually higher! NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) actually recommends more than the 64 ounce recommendation many of us are used to hearing. According to One Medical, NASM has “set an even higher volume of total daily water intake: 3.7 liters (15 cups) for the average adult male and 2.7 liters (11 cups) for the average adult female.” If these numbers seem intimidating, don’t worry, there is another way to get water and stay hydrated without filling up that cup dozens of times.
Good news for everyone, these amounts also include water from the food you consume. You can eat fruit and vegetables that are water-rich to keep your hydration in check. Not only can you eat your fruits to get the hydration you need, there are also many other benefits to eating fruit. Remember, staying properly hydrated has many benefits for your body including proper brain, heart, and muscle function.
One of the best fruits to eat is watermelon. Watermelon is 92% water! Did you know that A 1-cup serving contains over a half cup of water? Included in this water-dense fruit is fiber and several important nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin A and magnesium. Another great benefit is that watermelon is also very low in calories. There are only 46 calories per cup, so you can eat it without feeling guilty. It can quench your thirst and satisfy that sweet tooth.
Another great fruit to eat that has a high water content are strawberries. They have 91% water content, which can be excellent to help you stay hydrated. They are jam-packed with vitamins and minerals too, and have even been shown to reduce inflammation and protect your body against disease.
Cantaloupe is number three on our list of best fruits to eat. One cup of cantaloupe is roughly 90% water and provides about a half a cup of water per serving. It has 120% of your daily Vitamin A needs in just that one cup. Cantaloupe is great to eat on its own or even add to smoothies, salads, or yogurt.
You can also add these fruits to smoothies! You can find more information on smoothies in our blog called “Three smoothies that will change your health and appearance.” There, you will find numerous recipes you can use on the go. Each recipe also includes added vegetables which have even more benefits than just fruit. The great thing about smoothies is that with a proper balance of fruit and vegetables, you can usually not even taste the vegetables that are hidden inside!
With all the added hydration without reaching for cup and cup of water why wouldn’t you include more fruit in you diet? You get all those extra benefits plus fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants which make it overall a great choice.
